the last day of the year....

the last day of the year....
looking back, reminisce, remember and rethink
the good and the lesser things....

it was a tough year
some losses....
but also some positive things, like my new job!
and thanks to the travel time of three hours on a working day
i read a lot, over 70 books; ^))

some of my favorites are:

all 20 shortstories about Miss Marple by Agatha Christie
'To kill a Mocking Bird' Harper Lee (again ;^))
'Man with a Blue Scarf, on sitting for a Portrait by Lucian Freud' Martin Gayford
rereading all books by Marianne Fredriksson and loved them again
'The history of Love' Nicole Krauss
and last but not least
the book by Merlijne Marell 'Schobbejacques en de 7 geiten' (only in dutch but so worth it!!)

i am six days late with this monthly quote
my new job consumes all my time
i miss my days in my studio ....
however, the work is fun, the students great, my colleagues nice
i slowly get into a rhythm
slowly i get more time for the things i also love


ik ben zes dagen te laat met deze maandelijkse quote
mijn nieuwe baan verslindt al mijn tijd
ik mis mijn dagen in mijn studio ....
maar, het werk is leuk, de studenten geweldig, mijn collega's fijn
ik kom langzaamaan in een ritme
langzaam krijg ik meer tijd voor de dingen waar ik ook van hou

drawing challenge 150: COLOR & a homage....

on tuesday sweet Rose Ariane announced the new dc theme: color

i immediately thought of gray: the color of graphite, the color of my hair  ;^))
but also a color that you encounter a lot in our house and in my wardrobe
and a gray background is perfect for all colors!
only....
wednesday morning i read on facebook that Ariane's house was on fire
her beautiful new renovated castle, where they had just moved to
uninhabitable ....

hence the color gold as homage to Ariane
because she gives a golden lining to (among others) the drawing challenge

op dinsdag maakte Rose Ariane het nieuwe dc thema bekend: kleur

ik dacht meteen aan grijs: de kleur van een grafietpotlood, de kleur van mijn haar  ;^))
maar ook een kleur die je veel tegenkomt in ons huis en in mijn kledingkast
en een grijze achtergrond is perfect voor alle kleuren!
maar....
op woensdagmorgen las ik op facebook dat Ariane's huis in de brand stond
haar mooie nieuwe gerenoveerde kasteel, waarheen ze net was verhuisd
onbewoonbaar....

vandaar de kleur goud als hommage aan Ariane
omdat ze een gouden randje geeft aan (onder andere) de drawing challenge

in the first part of the two-part 
Dutch General Encyclopaedia of 1950 
i found this print 
'eggs of birds occuring in the Netherlands'
with an explanation and a longitudinal cross-section
of a chicken egg
but
actually
was the first thing i had to think of
the fritillaria which is called
lapwing flower or lapwing egg in dutch

in het eerste deel van de tweedelige 
Nederlandse Algemene Encyclopaedie uit 1950 
vond ik deze prent
'eieren van in Nederland voorkomende vogels
met een uitleg en een lengtedoorsnede 
van een kippenei
maar
eigenlijk
was het eerste waar ik aan moest denken
de fritillaria die in het nederlands
kievitsbloem of kievitseitje wordt genoemd

like last year I have been reading at least one book a week this year
some I read for the second, sometimes third, time
welcome as an old friend
others were new, or new to me

which book or author do you think I should read in 2013?

terwijl ik geniet van m'n nieuwe kop van Arabia en een boek van Detlev van Heest (waarvan de stijl me doet denken aan die van J.J.Voskuil, een soortgelijke manier van beschrijven van het dagelijks leven, de details ervan en de gesprekken) zie ik, elke keer als ik opkijk, de nieuwe kast die mijn vader maakte
hij die alles kan maken, al was deze opdracht iets te groot voor hem
de kast is prachtig, ik ben er enorm blij mee
dankjewel pap!

while I enjoy my new cup of Arabia and a book by Detlev van Heest (whose style reminds me of J.J.Voskuil, a similar way of describing daily life, the details of it and the conversations) I see, every time I look up, the new cabinet that my father made
he who can make anything, though this task was a bit too big for him
the cabinet is beautiful, I am very, very happy with it
thanks dad!

years ago Love and I spend the night in here
and hereby I can dream away....  what a theme!

a few years ago a friend and I joined in a contest:
'who makes the best book of 2009?'
we made a picture-book for children about 
the boy Boele and his friend Snail
Boele would like to have such a fine house as Snail
and gets to work with boards, sticks and nails
but his house turns out too big and too heavy to carry
eventually he hoists the house with the help of Donkey in a tree
and no, we were not among the 25 lucky winners

jaren geleden hebben Lief en ik hierin overnacht
en hierbij kan ik wegdromen....  wat een thema!

een paar jaar geleden deed ik samen met een vriendin mee aan een prijsvraag:
'wie maakt het mooiste boek van 2009?'
we maakten een prentenboek voor kinderen over
het jongetje Boele en zijn vriend Slak
Boele wil graag net zo'n fijn huis als Slak heeft
en gaat aan de slag met planken, takken en spijkers
maar zijn huis wordt te groot en te zwaar om te dragen
uiteindelijk hijst hij het huis met de hulp van Ezel in een boom
en nee, we behoorden niet tot de 25 gelukkige winnaars

lezen

tussentijd, tijd er tussenin, om te bezinnen, op te ruimen en te ordenen
terugkijkend op dit jaar...
overal zie je lijstjes, de beste 10, een top 100
mijn voornemen voor 2011 was meer te lezen, minstens één boek per week
en dat is gelukt
hierbij mijn jaar in 11 boeken

met een pot thee een hele middag in een andere wereld
(het eerste boek verscheen in 1934)
nu voor 80 eurocent per stuk bij de kringloop
ik kon ze niet laten liggen

with a pot of tea an afternoon in an other world
(the first book was published in 1934)
now for 80 eurocents each at the thrift-store
I could not leave them there
