the theme of this week is chosen by Veronica
please visit her blog for the link to the other participants

what C A L M me is
his hand in mine as i fall asleep
reading books
a long walk in the woods
the little body of Splinter (sweet memories)
and the sea
always the sea....
the sound of breaking waves
the heartbeaut of mother earth

linen, acrylic paint and a palette knife
the making is CALMing and soothing

boeken lezen
een lange wandeling in het bos
het lichaampje van Splinter (zoete herinneringen ;^)))
en de zee
altijd de zee ....
het geluid van de brekende golven
de hartslag van moeder aarde

all those tiny little seeds
which become the finest vegetables
in such a short time....

i made a portrait of a chard leaf
using watercolor and colored pencil

i have 'tiny' time for other things than my new job
sorry!
but i will visit you all as soon as possible
bye!

al die kleine zaadjes
die de mooiste groenten worden
in zo'n korte tijd ....

dag!

drawing challenge 165: COAT

for the three-days-course typesetting i took last january we had to bring texts to typeset
one of them was this one, shown in the second picture
translated:

Be what i wanted to be.
We have taught ourselves everything in life and at some point you think that you are that.
But that's a coat that you've put on. Without that coat you feel bare.
Yet it is important that you dare to discover what lies beneath.
first sentence of an unknown person
text by Marten Toonder, a dutch comic strip creator who had a great influence on the dutch language
by introducing new words and expressions

in addition i made a little sketch

as i said before i like to dress in layers
therefor i like big wide coats, to fit all the layers underneath
and preferably in dark colors, such as gray, brown or black
i once had a beautiful wide hooded coat made of brown corduroy
our sons named that coat 'moms magic coat'
but now I have a new coat, a very light and slim trench coat!
which makes me feel totally different....

for this drawing challenge i used the sketch
and wondered how i would look like in a multicolored coat
ok, with a little black and white  ;^))
i used pencil and some (old) tempera paint

for more COATs, please visit:

Ariane, Annton Beate, Nadine, Veronica,
Emily, Barbara, Leena, Melodye,
Stefanie, Carole, Tammie, Lucia
Tanïa, Katrin, Eric, Roberto and
Renilde

i wish you all a fine weekend!
x

P.S.
look what i found!
around 1984, me in my beloved big wide coat by Mac & Maggie
and then, as now, with too short trouser legs

drawing challenge 159: vein

the theme of this weeks drawing challenge is chosen by VERONICA
for the links to the other participants, please go here

the finest veins of a leaf (image not by me but from the internet)
the veins in me
where the blood flows quietly towards the heart
they lie on the surface, so vulnerable
and that fits so well with how I feel.... february blues
this year reinforced by the fact that
since a few months our dog Splinter no longer lives with us
for various reasons, one the allergy and eczema of Oldest
we miss our little one....

i made this painting for DC 35 'family' in 2011
the love for our family that flows through my veins
size 20 x 30 cm

we missen onze kleine....

afmeting 20 x 30 cm

drawing challenge 140: NUDE

thank you for joining this NUDE-dc, dear
Carole, Sally, Barbara, Ariane, Veronica, Susan, Tania, Roberto, Céline, Tammie,
Leena, Eric, Eva, Norma, JoanneNadine and Kristen!

do you remember this 'drawing' i made for the 9th dc, theme 'letters of the alphabet'?
it was my 4th dc and my first nude on this site

i love to use nudes in my work, that was already at artschool and that's still the case
although you will rarely see me in a sauna or even in a swimsuit  ;^))

i do love the sun on my bare skin, especially on my neck and shoulders
and
i like a covered nudity, that there remains room for imagination
that's what i like about the japanese kimono
the collar exposes the neck, which is a major erotic zone for the japanese,
the white face makeup runs to the back but leaves a small portion nude

so, that's what i wanted to paint
my nude neck
with the paintings of Lucian Freud and Michael Borremans in mind
and
that i will
later

3.5.14

drawing challenge: F O O D

i have a love-hate relationship with food and easily skip a meal
but since we have children that has changed
when our eldest son was five years old he had to follow a strict diet, roughly:
no dairy, eggs, sugar, spices or yeast bread
but vegetables, most fruit, green herbs and sourdough bread
and all that preferable organic or organic dynamic
i am therefore pleased that the organic farmshop of Do was and is so close
this all has changed my view on food
today i read cookbooks as novels and is Oldest a healthy young man
who even likes beetroots  ;^)))

i have sown regular and striped beets in my kitchen garden
and like them best in a salad
but for this dc i used beetjuice as paint

and then
these mittens came by mail, thank you so much!!

in dutch beets are called 'bieten' or 'kroten'

please visit all the other participants:

Nadine, Ariane, Janey G, Céline, Sarapirat (maybe),
Joanne, Stefanie, Kristen, Barbara Bee, Eric, Leena,
Susan, Eva (welcome!) and Carole

before last image a page of the fine cookbook: Mr.Wilkinson's favourite vegetables

drawing challenge: W A T E R

without water there is no life
but in this part of the world clean drinking water from the tap is very common

a quarter of the Netherlands lies below sea level and might come under water
if there were no dikes and dunes

weeks ago i saw the interview with Geurt Busser, the Wadden painter (sorry, only in Dutch)
every day he paints the Wadden with watercolors
standing in the water, working with water
while the wind and rain affect his work

that's what i've tried
painting with water

please visit all the other participants for more W A T E R:

Ariane, Barbara Bee, Tammie Lee, Susan Christensen,
Joanne, Leena, Sue, Nadine (maybe), Roberto, Cindi,
Stefanie Seltner, Céline, Kristen, Mano, Tania, Kim Henkel,
Eric (welcome!!) and Veronica and Norma !!

24.11.13

drawing challenge: autumn

on a fine autumn day....
early in the morning first a walk through the woods with the dog
enjoying the colors of the trees and the thick layer of leaves
enjoying the sound and smell when we walk through
i love the low position of the sun, the light different and warmer
especially when it shines on the discolored reed
a constant golden movement, with in between, hard to see because
he wears the gray colors of a cloudy autumn day:
a heron
acrylic on canvas, with some beads, 2009

the theme 'autumn' is chosen bij sweet rose Ariane

11.5.13

drawing challenge: smell or scent

this week's theme is chosen by Barbara

our sense of smell is our most direct sense
to a large extent scents determine our memories and emotions
but are often difficult to describe in words

some of my favorite scents and memories are:
. the smell of the sea: summer vacations late '60s
for weeks we went to the beach very early in the morning
and in the afternoon when it became crowded back home again
. the smell of open water: by boat late '70s and '80s
and of course with TREES!
. the scent of flowering privet: i am 6 years old and on my way to school
what happend to all those privet hedges?
. the smell of the heads of my boys on the day they were born
sweet as freshly baked bread rolls
. the smell of the garden after a rain shower
. the smell of blooming tulip fields in the evening after a warm spring day
. the aroma of tomatoes i buy at the farm....

i love tomatoes and just yesterday there were tomato plants for sale at the farm!
so i bought three different varieties
i love the smell but also the taste
my favorite tomato salad:
halved tomatoes, freshly ground pepper, crumbled Bettine Blanc,
pine nuts and some fig-date vinegar
;^))

tomatoes drawn with pencil and colored with watercolor
then cut out and photographed

7.11.12

ondertussen....

* * * *

meanwhile I am working on the last chores for the mini-sales-exhibition

I still feel tired, but
due an ultrasound of my upper abodemen I know now
that everything is in order
has it all to do with my hormone?

and we have a new cabinet
made by my father, but
more on that later

3.11.12

drawing challenge: portrayal - abbild - evenbeeld

portrayal - abbild
is exactly what I have done in the past few weeks
making portraits, similar images
of owls and a wren
and
I am almost done

sweet Ariane of Die Rose is our host this week

P.S.
the literal translation of winterkoninkje (wren) is winter kinglet
and
we call an eagle-owl oehoe

* * * *

portrayal - abbild
