drawing challenge 189: C O C O O N

It's time for more silence.


COCOON
drawing challenge 189

annually
at the end of the winter
i long for a soft white place
to hibernate
a cocoon
in which i can curl
a safe embrace
waiting for spring
before i get out
converted and 
with wings
in the color of the sky


i used a form that i crocheted years ago
and turned it into a cocoon on a branch
the bookprinting/quote and linocut 
are works that i made earlier

finally.... an etsyshop update
boy, did that take long....
but it's done! 
these images are from a few weeks ago
when i was happily printing
just before i started my new job
.... i miss the smell of the printing ink
the sound of miss Stuttgart
soon, soon....
for now
very welcome in my shop!


eindelijk .... een etsyshop-update
jongen, wat duurde dat lang
maar het is gedaan!
deze foto's zijn van enkele weken geleden
toen gelukkig aan het afdrukken was
net voordat ik begon bij mijn nieuwe baan
.... ik mis de geur van de drukinkt
het geluid van miss Stuttgart
binnenkort, binnenkort....
voor nu
hartelijk welkom in mijn winkel!

printing with NADINE

and than NADINE came for a few days

on one of those days we worked in my studio
together we came up with a fine sentence
then typesetting with my old wood type
but because i have little letters
there were three print runs before it was ready

NADINE happily worked with miss Stuttgart
and i enjoyed her company

we printed with gold printing ink based on linseed oil on A4 sized artist paper

en toen kwam NADINE voor een paar dagen

op een van die dagen werkten we samen in mijn studio
samen bedachten we een fijne zin
daarna letterzetten met mijn oude houten drukletters
maar omdat ik maar weinig letters heb
waren het drie drukgangen voordat het klaar was

NADINE werkte met veel plezier met miss Stuttgart
en ik genoot van haar gezelschap

we drukten met gouden drukinkt gebaseerd op lijnzaadolie op A4 formaat artist paper

maar daar werk ik aan

drawing challenge169: YOUTH

look at her, 19 years old
in love with one of his friends
but it is he who writes a song about her
which he shyly handed on tape
it is the start of their friendship
and it is with him that she has adventures like
a tour through the dunes and bunkers
a picnic in a meadow full of cows
youth....

her love with his friend ended
but the friendship with him continued
it still does! he is the one that timbered TREES
and, he still sings 

since this drawing challenge i want 
to make a series about my little me
searching for images in an old photo album 
i found this one of 1967 
and
i am still happily playing with type  ;^))

Stichting Lettergieten

last saturday i visited Stichting Lettergieten te Westzaan
in some spaces of an old school i found the most beautiful old machines
(all working!), letters, enthusiastic volunteers and more

Stichting Lettergieten is a foundation about typefounding
they manage a historic Monotype collection:
molding machines, Monotype preposition molding machines, 
Monotype keyboards, molds and parts

new on my wish list:
a typecase Grotesque Condensed 383, corps 30



afgelopen zaterdag bezocht ik Stichting Lettergieten te Westzaan
in enkele ruimten van een oude school vond ik de mooiste oude machines
(allemaal werkend!), letters, enthousiaste vrijwilligers en meer

Stichting Lettergieten is wat de naam zegt
ze beheren een historische Monotype-collectie:
gietmachines, Monotype zetselmachines, 
Monotype toetsenborden, matrijzen en onderdelen

nieuw op mijn wensenlijstje:

drawing challenge 165: COAT

for the three-days-course typesetting i took last january we had to bring texts to typeset
one of them was this one, shown in the second picture

Be what i wanted to be.
We have taught ourselves everything in life and at some point you think that you are that. 
But that's a coat that you've put on. Without that coat you feel bare. 
Yet it is important that you dare to discover what lies beneath.

text by Marten Toonder, a dutch comic strip creator who had a great influence on the dutch language 
by introducing new words and expressions

in addition i made a little sketch

as i said before i like to dress in layers
therefor i like big wide coats, to fit all the layers underneath
and preferably in dark colors, such as gray, brown or black
i once had a beautiful wide hooded coat made of brown corduroy
our sons named that coat 'moms magic coat' 
but now I have a new coat, a very light and slim trench coat!
which makes me feel totally different....

for this drawing challenge i used the sketch
and wondered how i would look like in a multicolored coat
ok, with a little black and white  ;^))
i used pencil and some (old) tempera paint

typesetting

last weekend i had, together with four others, a three-day course typesetting
it was given by master printer Thomas Gravemaker
in the book printer studio of Grafisch Atelier Hilversum
and boy! did i like it

i typeset six texts
the last picture shows one (sorry, it's in dutch ;^))
it is quote of Sonia Gaskell, founder and first artistic director of the National Ballet
saying: girl, girl, if you fall, always make something of it




afgelopen weekend had ik, samen met vier anderen, een 3-daagse cursus letterzetten
het werd gegeven door meester-drukker Thomas Gravemaker
in de boekdrukkerij van Grafisch Atelier Hilversum
en man! wat heb ik genoten

with a golden touch & a giveaway

only yesterday i started making christmas cards
to late as always, therefor i made the same cards like last year
only now i printed them with goldcoloured ink
the sound of miss Stuttgart, the smell of the ink, how i love it!

once finished there was still some ink left
so i also printed a few  feathers  ;^))
that is the giveaway!

i made two sets consisting of:
two cards with a golden feather (A4 folded to size A5)
two glassine envelopes and two golden stickers
(like these cards from my shop)

gisteren ben ik begonnen met het maken van kerstkaarten
te laat zoals altijd, daarom maakte ik dezelfde kaarten als vorig jaar
alleen nu drukte ik deze met goudkleurige inkt
het geluid van miss Stuttgart, de geur van de inkt, wat hou ik daarvan!

eenmaal klaar was er nog wat inkt over
dus drukte ik ook nog een paar veren  ;^))
dat is de giveaway!

ik maakte twee sets bestaande uit:
twee kaarten met een gouden veer (A4 gevouwen tot A5)
twee pergamijn enveloppen en twee gouden stickers
(zoals deze kaarten uit mijn winkel)
als je deze wilt winnen laat een reactie achter met de reden waarom
op 28 december maak ik de twee winnaars bekend
veel geluk en een vrolijk kerstfeest !!!!

shop update & drawing challenge

it took a long time before i dared to open an online store
partly because i'm a "yes, but...." person
i always see difficulties and obstacles on my path
this print as a reminder to just do

het duurde een lange tijd voordat ik een online windel durfde te openen
deels omdat ik een "ja, maar...." persoon ben
ik zie altijd moeilijkheden en beren op mijn pad
deze afdruk als een herinnering om gewoon te doen
vanaf vandaag te koop in mijn etsywinkel

Vibeke of 'a butterfly in my hair' invited me for a BLOG HOP
here are my answers to the 4 questions

what i am working on:
at the moment i am working on several things
i will have my yearly exhibition in october in the finest shop in our village
i am therefor brooding on different ideas, there will be linocut prints of nudes and birds, and some quotes
all in black printing ink on white paper and some gold
and i finally will open an etsyshop this month (oops! so little time left) 
besides that i am making lists of the seeds i want to order for my kitchen garden 
and i am making my own clothes again  ;^))

how my work differs from others in it's genre:
such a difficult one, i don't know.... i just make things i like to make, for me, for myself
little stories about me in a clear line, clean and simple, in black on white (when it comes to linocuts)
in everything i try to stay true to myself, which i find difficult now and then
and 
it still can surprise me that somebody else likes what i make as much as i do

why i create what i do:
i just have to, it makes me happy to work with my hands 
i see myself more as a maker than an artist, i like so many things
which is nice but also a problem, when it comes to focus
since i was little i love to draw, etching and linocuts came at a later stage
i love the smell of the lino and of the printing ink, and i love the sound of my beautiful printing press
since i have that press (a Korrex Stuttgart proofpress from 1967) i can also print texts
using old wooden letterpress letters and hopefully soon also lead type

how my creative process works:
most of the time it starts with writing down a more or less vague idea 
in words with little doodle drawings to support
than the brooding begins
inspiration can come from an image, something someone said, and so many other things
i like the process of writing, drawing and thinking, of inventing, modifying, adapting and sorting out
whether it's a linocut, a painting or an interior project
i think i like this the best, the brooding part
after that (when it comes to linocuts) i draw directly on the lino and adjust, when necessary, while cutting and proof-printing
finally i print just a few, i like my editions to be limited

re-opening THUIS, UPDATE!

yesterday was the re-opening of THUIS lunch&living
and in a beautiful spot in the store i was allowed to show (and sell ;^)) my work

en op een prachtige plek in de winkel mocht ik mijn werk tonen (en verkopen ;^))

i am a coward, am afraid of everything
i am also a perfectionist, it's almost never good enough
and all the beauty that i see on the internet can sometimes paralyze me
i myself am my worst enemy....

my word for 2014 is TRUST
confidence in myself, trust in my ability
with that in mind i made this phrase
and how i love my beautiful miss Stuttgart!



ik ben een bangerik, ben bang voor van alles
daarnaast ben ik een perfectionist, het is vrijwel nooit goed genoeg
en al het moois dat ik zie op het internet kan me soms verlammen
ikzelf ben mijn grootste vijand....

mijn woord voor 2014 is VERTROUWEN
vertrouwen in mijzelf, vertrouwen in m'n kunnen
met dat in gedachten maakte ik deze zin
en wat hou ik van mijn mooie miss Stuttgart!
